Mackilwean Turf Farm has been a North Carolina family farm since 1790. James McIlwean migrated from Scotland to New Bern in 1730. Francis McIlwean Jr., James’ grandson, began farming in New Bern around 1790. During the 1980’s, some eastern North Carolina farmers began to diversify from tobacco and row crops to other farm crops. The McIlweans pursued Christmas trees for a while, then eventually settled with Turfgrass. The need for specialty grasses for commercial and residential lawns, and athletic fields became more evident. McIlwean Farms stepped to the front and changed from row crops to Turf Farming to supply the market place with a product to enhance landscapes of our beautiful state.
In 1993 the farm business was incorporated in the name of Mackilwean Turf Farm, Inc., using the spelling of the family name of the first immigrants that arrived in New Bern in 1730.
Our goal is to supply North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia with quality products and services to meet the landscaping needs of our customers as we grow into the new millennium.
